Are you worried about your belly tattoo? What will you do with your belly button curl? We asked tattoo artists what to do during pregnancy.

Many pregnant women wonder what will happen to their piercings and tattoos. Belly button piercings and deformed tattoos are among the most common issues, but many other issues can arise during pregnancy and breastfeeding. That's why we spoke to Mélanie and Josyane of Laval Tattoo Art. They told us about nipple piercings, Prince Albert and the possibility of covering stretch marks with a tattoo.
Can you get a tattoo while pregnant?
According to Josyane, getting a tattoo during pregnancy is taking a risk. She explained to us: “The skin is more fragile and sensitive, so healing is poor. We are also more at risk of vagal discomfort, which is dangerous for the fetus. »
The vagal discomfort she speaks of is a slow heartbeat that often causes a drop in blood pressure and sometimes unconsciousness. This discomfort sometimes affects people who are afraid of needles andthose who feel sudden pain, such as that which can be felt during the piercing. This is a fairly rare phenomenon, but it is a risk that is better not to take during pregnancy, according to Josyane.
According to Mélanie, the risk of infection can also be problematic and should be taken into consideration, during pregnancy, but also during breastfeeding. The fact that the skin is stretched, swollen and changes very quickly during pregnancy should also be a deterrent.
Will pre-pregnancy tattoos warp?

According to Josyane: “Tattoos do not always deform. Every woman is different, sometimes yes, sometimes no. According to Mélanie: “The closer you get to the navel, the greater the risk of it ruining the tattoo. If it's on the hip or the ribs, it's less bad.”
Distortion depends on several other factors. The drawing as such stretches along with the belly, but the condition of the tattoo also depends on the condition of the skin after pregnancy. A pregnancy apron and stretch marks will obviously change the look of a tattoo that was on the stomach.
Should belly button jewelry be removed when the belly grows?
When the belly stretches, the belly button jewelry pushes the skin between the two ends of the jewelry. At first it is bearable, but after a while the stretch becomes a bit painful and the skin stings. This is because the skin thins and therisk of tearing is more present, especially since the jewel protrudes more and risks snagging in clothing and elsewhere.
According to Mélanie and Josyane, it is best to remove the jewelry at the first signs of discomfort to avoid stretching the skin around the holes. Women can also put on a softer upper in early pregnancy to keep it a little longer. To prevent the hole from closing - which happens quite quickly with some people - they advise slipping the jewel into the piercing from time to time while taking a shower. You can use a lubricant to make it easier.

In some people, new allergies can also develop during pregnancy, as well as intolerances to certain metals. To avoid problems, monitor your piercings closely and consult your piercer/tattoo artist if in doubt.
Finally, Mélanie reminds us that metal jewelry must be removed in the event of a caesarean section and that it is better to remove it before arriving at the hospital, or change it for plastic jewelry.
What is the impact of a pierced nipple on breastfeeding?
Pierced nipples are not a contraindication to breastfeeding, but this information could make your life easier. First, you should know that the jewel can cause blockages in the milk ducts, but Josyane advises to simply put a hot water compress to unblock them. She also insists on themakes it absolutely necessary to remove the jewel during drinking.
Are there any other problems ahead? According to Josyane: “You have to watch because breastfeeding is done in bigger waves, the milk comes out through the holes if the breast is pierced. It's quite comical, a triple jet, but you have to check that the drinking takes place normally. Also, constantly removing and replacing breast piercings can cause additional irritation. If there are, it is best to remove them at this time”
What if my spouse has a Prince Albert (or other genital piercing)?
Prince Albert, so called because of a made-up anecdote about the famous prince, is a piercing on the right or left of the frenulum, made using a needle that the it comes out through the urethra. A ring is inserted into the hole thus formed at the base of the glans.
According to Mélanie and Josyane, the partner's Prince Albert should not be a problem during sex for a pregnant woman if the jewelry is of good quality and is screwed on tightly. On the other hand, as the jewels are quite big and heavy, it is not totally impossible that they cause pain and if so, it will be better to remove them.
After childbirth, is it possible to cover stretch marks with tattoos?

Some women who don't like the look of their postpartum belly consider covering stretch marks with tattoos. To know if it is a goodidea, we asked Josyane and Mélanie what they thought of it. According to them, this is a delicate matter that must be seriously considered by a competent tattoo artist who knows how to work with scars. If done incorrectly, tattoo ink can smear into the stretch marks and highlight them when the opposite effect is desired.
First, tattooing a pregnancy apron will not give a good effect according to them. It is better to use a face lift first, and then think about the tattoo option. They also think that small tattoos emphasize stretch marks and that a big tattoo would work better. When in doubt, Josyane offers a nice tattoo on the hips, or the waist, which will attract attention elsewhere.
You should also know that tattoos can only be done on white stretch marks, which have stopped evolving. Red or pink scars keep moving and tattoo artists prefer to wait before touching them. According to them, it is therefore necessary to wait a year, sometimes more, before thinking of covering your stretch marks to promote the healing of the tattoo and for the results to be beautiful. To help them fade and improve blood circulation, they suggest massages and Bio Oil which they have tested and like.
Once this is done, a meeting with your tattoo artist is in order to evaluate the options and find a solution that will give a nice result. In their studio, it is Geneviève who works the mostoften with the scars and who can advise you.
