Should you buy a shoe with an arch inside or not? Choose a boot or a soft shoe? From what age should my child wear shoes?

In order to demystify the choice of footwear for children, here are the answers to the most common questions I am asked in the podiatric clinic.

What shoes should I buy my child?

Before the walk: Children who are not yet walking do not need shoes. It has been shown that stiff, compressive shoes can cause deformities, muscle weakness and loss of mobility. The shoes are designed to protect children's feet; cold, heat, wounds. That's all! They must therefore be flexible, wide and light.

The reason why the bootie is sometimes more attractive is simply that your little one will have a harder time taking it off! Sometimes the podiatrist can recommend it in the presence of balance problems, delay in walking, but it is better to consult him if this is the case.

How often should I change my child's shoes?

Above all, no shoe should be bought if your child hasn't tried them. Always take good care of shop in the presence of your child and do not hesitate to ask for advice on the measurement of his foot.

Before 18 months, feet change about half a point every 2 months. For toddlers aged 18-24 months, it's more like every 3 months. When the child reaches the age of 3, he will change a size or two per year.

Does my child have flat feet? Should he wear ankle boots with a small arch?

Almost all 18-month-olds have flat feet, and it's completely normal. It is even possible that the absence of an arch lasts until he is 5-6 years old. This is a simple variation in development due to the fatty pad present in the arch of the foot.

When is it important to consult with my child?

If your child is in pain, it is important to consult. If the child stumbles often, has less stamina than other children his age, or reports pain in his legs or feet, consult your podiatrist.

You can also consult if you have concerns about the position of his feet or the wear of his shoes. The podiatrist will be happy to advise you on what can be done.
