An optimal immune system can effectively fight diseases as diverse as cancer, colds and flu.

Several factors interfere with its proper functioning: stress, a negative attitude, depression, pollution, tobacco, heavy metals and pesticides are some of them. Food, you guessed it, is also a determining factor in the he alth of the immune system. Here are some recommendations to better fight against the disease and the aggressors.
Foods that lower the strength of the immune system
- Saturated and trans fats: too much consumption promotes the following cancers: colon, breast, ovary and prostate.
- The nitrates found in deli meats form carcinogenic compounds in the body; when consuming or offering it to your children, include a food rich in vitamin C.
- Barbecue cooking, frying and over-grilling meats also have a carcinogenic effect.
- Some food additives may affect the immune system; therefore, it is recommended to use as few products as possible containing additives.
- Aflatoxin, a substance found in old nutsand expired peanut butter, is highly carcinogenic.

Practical tips to optimize the immune system
- Consume adequate amounts of protein, as it is useful for the formation of antibodies against infections.
- Take sources of essential fats daily. Omega-3s are found in ground flax seeds, canola and soybean oil, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, fish.
- Avoid an excess of polyunsaturated fats, as they are sensitive to oxidation, which releases free radicals which promote the development of tumours.
- Eat five or more servings of vegetables and fruits a day, including daily those rich in vitamin C (citrine fruits, kiwis, etc.) and beta carotenes (carrots, cantaloupe, etc.). These vitamins are antioxidants and protect against cancer. In addition, vitamin C promotes the proper functioning of the immune system.
- Clean fruits and vegetables thoroughly to remove pesticide residues (use a solution of water with vinegar). Regularly consume cruciferous vegetables: cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, rutabaga. They reduce the risk of cancer.
- Eating a diet high in fiber (fruits, vegetables, whole grain cereals, legumes) protects against colon cancer.
- Consume yogurt or lactic acid bacteria supplement daily. They decrease the proportion of harmful bacteria in the intestineand form a protective mucus on the intestinal wall. Use garlic and onions in the kitchen: they are said to have anticancer and anti-infectious properties.
- Eating 2-3 servings of dairy products (because of the calcium) may protect against colon cancer.
- Choose foods that contain other substances with an antioxidant or anticancer effect: vitamin E, selenium, phenolic compounds (tea, apples, potatoes, soy, garlic), flavonoids (tea, onions, broccoli, citrus, etc.).
- Exercising regularly will strengthen your immune system.
