The FitSpirit approach, which aims to promote physical activity and the joy of practicing it with friends, is currently in full swing across hundreds of schools in Quebec and Ontario. But what does it eat in winter, a FitSpirit ambassador?

To find out, I spoke with Marie-Michelle Darveau, who told me about her personal journey as a FitSpirit ambassador and told me a little more about her role (and that of colleagues) within the organization.

You are now in your third year as a FitSpirit ambassador. How did you find out about FitSpirit and what made you want to get involved?

In fact, I discovered FitSpirit on Facebook by pure chance four years ago. The organization was then in the midst of a recruitment period and was doing a lot of advertising to find ambassadors. As I myself suffered from excess weight and a lack of confidence in my youth, I immediately felt challenged by their mission, which really put self-esteem first. So I wanted to get involved to sharemy life experience and encourage other young girls to become more active and discover all the benefits of physical activity.

What is your role as a FitSpirit ambassador? Do you give lectures or do you organize activities?

Personally, I take on the role of FitSpirit ambassador for all three parts of the approach, which means giving motivational talks, hosting the official launch of the running training program foot and that I also lead physical activity sessions in various schools. Being a professional dancer by training, I mainly offer urban dance workshops, but also yoga classes. Finally, I take part in the FitSpirit Celebrations in Montreal and Quebec where I participate in the final race with the participants!

What do you enjoy most about being a FitSpirit Ambassador?

What I like the most is seeing a sparkle in the eyes of young girls who discover, often for the first time, the real pleasure of getting active. I tell myself that if I can have a positive impact in the life of just one of these girls, I will have achieved my goal and I could have given back a little of all the inspiration that I received myself. from all the teachers who crossed my path.

What do you want participants to take away from their FitSpirit experience?

The importance of finding a true passion, discovering activities they lovereally and to which they can cling in the most difficult moments, which will allow them to escape and let go of their madness. Learn to develop positive dependencies what!

You mentioned a lack of confidence in your youth. What was your relationship to physical activity at the time and how did it evolve afterwards?

When I was in elementary school, I didn't have much self-confidence and wasn't very athletic; I was the stereotypical girl who always gets picked last in PE class. When I entered high school, I decided to enroll in a sports-study program in dance, and that's when everything changed. I discovered a real vocation and it had a huge impact on my self-esteem. I continued in CEGEP by completing a DEC in dance, then I attended The School of Dance, a dance conservatory located in Ottawa which allowed me to make my way in the industry and discover the ODD dance company. I work for today. Anyway, it has never left me since!

What do you think young girls like most about the FitSpirit approach?

I think it's the fact that the FitSpirit approach is really based on the pleasure of playing sports with friends and that the atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly. The FitSpirit ambassadors all have different backgrounds and different body shapes too, which gives the girls models that are grounded in reality and far removed from the toxic perfection thatfound on social media. There is no competition, no pressure, and we really take into account the needs of the girls. It's a moment of relaxation for them, a moment when they can be themselves in complete freedom.

In closing, what would you say to girls who are reluctant to embark on the FitSpirit experience?

I would tell them to go for it and trust themselves. They will certainly be surprised by their own abilities and all the more motivated by the changes they will observe in their energy and spirit. It is important to give ourselves challenges in life, it is what pushes us to always go further and to realize ourselves completely!
