Do we take the time to take the time?

The year is already (!!) coming to an end. Four seasons have passed. 52 weeks of possibilities, 365 days of potential renewal – or not. What have we done with this year given to us?

Because time is a precious gift. Let's ask all those people (perhaps you are one?) who have received a diagnosis that puts an expiration date on their existence or makes it dangle a little too close. Let's talk to those people who lost a loved one too soon. Because the loss of a loved one always comes too soon.

Let's ask ourselves about our relationship to time. How many times this year have we said, “Hey! The time flies! or even, “Damn the weather is looong”. Because time, although it has an objective component (60 seconds is still 60 seconds), it also has a subjective one. Sixty seconds doing something you love flies by, while 60 seconds of an awfully uncomfortable situation seems endless.

Subway, work, sleep

During these 365 days or if you prefer, these 8,760 hours, what did we do? We probably spent a third at work (2,920 hours). This workl,do we like it? Does it excite us? Does it allow us to surpass ourselves? To make us feel competent? Professionally fulfilled? And when we are not there, what is our relationship to this job? Is it stressing us out too much? Do we have trouble falling asleep at night thinking about the tasks at hand, about that co-worker or boss who is giving us a hard time? Or on the contrary, do we go home tired, yes, but satisfied?

How long does it take to get to and from work? And during this time, what do we do? Are we immersed in a good book as the train takes us to our destination or are we railing against the traffic – in which we collaborate?

When we got home, we slept about another third, so 2,920 hours as well. What is the quality of our sleep? Do we feel rested in the morning? How do we relate to sleep? Is it distressing, comforting or something else? Do we sleep with someone we love – a spouse or ourselves?

Yes, do we love each other? Are we kind to ourselves?

Different Roles

And the third of the time we have left of our year, a last 2,920 hours, how do we occupy it? Do we have a busier schedule than that of a president? Do we have time to relax in a good bubble bath or on the couch, accompanied by a good book? Do we take the time to do it instead? Or do we try to stun ourselves with activities that lead us by the nose, on the run, always? do we take the timeto invest the different spheres of our lives: that of parent, friend, spouse, wife, sister or daughter?

Does one sphere suffer at the expense of the others? Does it suit us or bother us?

Time is precious. Life is precious. It is up to us to look at our options and make the choices that suit us best. Happy New Year!
