It was in April 2006, after months of hope and expectation that I finally received the second most coveted title of my life, that of Grandma!

I took my grandson Marius in my arms and it was love at first sight and total happiness. He is now 2 ½ years old and calls me Mamie Anne. I had an important instruction from my daughter concerning Marius when he was born and it was to speak to him in English so that he would become bilingual, which his grandfather and I have been doing since day one and it's mission accomplished. ! I nicknamed my grandson “Sweet Pea”, but he is actually a construction and renovation guy! His grandfather, Papi André, transmitted to him his passion for cars, trucks, mechanics, construction… It is furious madness when he sees a mechanical shovel, a fire truck or any other machine construction.

Beyond Generations

My mother was an excellent grandmother who adored my daughter. She devoted a lot of time to him and she was very focused on education, discipline and all academic learning. She never talked about her emotions and expressions of affection were reserved for specific times. It was important to her that my daughter was clean at 2 years old,can write the alphabet and numbers at 3 ½ years old… I appreciated and applauded her many accomplishments, but I experience my role as a grandmother differently from my mother. I verbalize my love for Marius, I show him a lot of affection, I sing him songs, I encourage him and congratulate him. Our games together are sometimes educational, but always fun. I try to contribute as best I can to his happiness and fulfillment.

What a beautiful role

I realize that I am revisiting the same journey I made with my daughter's education and learning. I sometimes relive the same feelings: love, anguish, fear, hope, wonder… I also realize that I wouldn't have the nerves or the heart strong enough to raise a child at this stage of my life. That's why I'm so thankful that my daughter is an amazing, passionate and dedicated mom.

Finally, being Marius' Grandma is a wonderful gift of life, and being Michèle's mom is a gift of love and a life lesson that prepared me well to become a grandmother.
