Did you know that redness on baby's bottom is not necessarily caused by the diaper he is wearing?
This redness, called diaper rash, can also be caused by a yeast infection, candidiasis.
And here, we are not talking about the beautiful little spring flower that smells so good, but about this infection that we recognize by its small whitish or even grayish spots that can appear in the child's mouth, but also on her buttocks.
What is this?
The skin of all human beings is colonized by Candida yeast, even that of babies. We therefore do not catch it, the yeasts are already in place and are just waiting to develop. A number of factors can increase the chances of these yeasts growing out of control. And the main one is an overuse of antibiotics! The yeasts (which are not affected by the antibiotics) then spread in the places left free by the bacteria, and begin to grow and multiply.
Symptoms
Thrush is characterized by the appearance of scabs and pustules on the edges of the infected area, usually in places that are never exposed to the sun: the groin, the folds of the buttocks, the mouth, the toes or fingers, and in thenavel.
Treatment
If diaper rash appears as a result of a yeast infection, it is best to consult a doctor who can then prescribe an antifungal cream or powder. You can also consult a pharmacist who can direct you to one of the many products available without a prescription: zinc-based cream, Calendula oil, white clay, shea butter, etc. Sometimes you have to try several before you find the one that will relieve diaper rash symptoms.
But even more often, buttock rash occurs as a result of prolonged exposure to urine or stool. There are therefore basic tips for preventing and even curing erythema yourself, which can prove to be very painful for babies in the long run.
The first thing is that you have to change the diaper as often as necessary, especially if you use cotton diapers. Then, it is recommended to wash the buttocks with water and a mild soap at each diaper change and to dry the skin well before putting on a clean diaper. And don't be shy about leaving baby bare-buttocks for short periods, but frequently throughout the day, which helps the skin breathe and lose excess moisture.
Diaper rash can also result from the use of close-fitting, airtight plastic panties or even a plastic diaper, which prevents moisture from evaporating, and increases the risk of skin irritation.
