We only have enough money to indulge once in a while and not enough to do stupid things. So here are our top tips for buying the right thing when you need it, period!

Avoid taking a walk… at the mall

This is to be avoided at all costs! Going for a bike ride, a walk around the neighborhood or reading a magazine can easily save someone who has a shopping spree or goes to the mall with the whole family to get bored.

Resist Clothing at 3 for $15

Yes, it's great when each piece costs ONLY five dollars. It's quite a bargain! But the goal is to buy clothes you want to wear, not fill the closet with clothes you'll probably never wear. Buying quality is more durable, it's more beautiful, and it's above all better for the wallet!

Cleaning up. For real

Yes, it's true that fashions are coming back like grunge is still showing up, after the 50s and 80s. The cycle will start again and again, but the cuts do change, and the fabrics too. If thisWere it not, you would have seen Fortrel clothes everywhere when the Mad Men TV show started. Keeping those old things in our drawers hurts all our clothes looking ugly because of that old 1997 turquoise jacket making us look like a clown. Throw away these old-fashioned bits, even if it means maybe we didn't taste so good 10 years ago!

Be selective

You have to go to bazaars and thrift stores to find good quality clothes at half the price, but you should only buy nice clothes there that are well maintained and well cut off, otherwise we end up with the old, misshapen sweatshirts that someone loved way too long before us. Not all bargains are! Keep an eye out!

Raise your expectations a bit

Nobody needs to buy something just “ok”. By dint of having "correct" jeans that must be camouflaged with a "correct" tunic and sweater that you also hide under a somewhat large jacket that "does the job", you end up with a whole wardrobe “correct” dress… and never anything nice to wear!

Unsubscribe from business newsletters

All the stores and online businesses from whom we have purchased send us their new arrivals once a week by email, if not several times! If we have the misfortune to watch them, we will buy these bargainsfantastic on the latest clothes, even if in reality you don't need anything. Unfollow or delete without watching or you might find it hard to resist!

Having sober tastes

When you have little money, it's better to have classic tastes and buy things that won't go out of style anytime soon, especially if you spend a lot of money on quality clothes. For decades, stripes, checks, black dress, solid colors, fitted dresses and no-frills jeans have aged well. In other words, these timeless pieces are a long-term investment.

Decorating with classics

It's the same with decoration items. What we find in all the decoration stores, which we present to you as being really trendy, will inevitably end up on the shelves of all the supermarkets and we will soon have seen too many of them. If you really love an item, indulge yourself, but avoid redecorating every time fashion changes. Also choose timeless materials, such as solid wood, if you want to go through the years without regretting your choices… trendy!

Think before buying toys

Toys that stain, contain small, easily lost pieces, break on day one, or squeal unbearable songs will inevitably end up in the top of a cupboard orstraight into the trash. Consulting the Annual Guide to Games and Toys from Protégez-Vous is already a good start! It lists the best and worst games and toys to help you make wise choices. And remember, if you already hate a toy at the store, you should avoid buying it despite the fluttering eyelashes of the little one. Anyway, there are so many trains, dolls, books and blocks that we can stick to safe values.

Be consistent

If we dream every Saturday morning of eating good pancakes with maple syrup and we refrain from buying them because of the price of the syrup, but we buy dollar trinkets on the counters of all the shops because it's only a dollar, we deprive ourselves of good pancakes with maple syrup for really nothing!
