They will have plenty of time to observe them without being afraid when the insects are in a glass jar. On your side, you will have a good activity that will not cost much.
Do you know that you can make a kite with just a plastic bag, straws, dental floss, pencil and tape? There is a fairly simple tutorial on Youtube that will show you how. Once you know how, you can replicate the experience almost anywhere. This will be both a craft and a game that should keep the kids busy for quite a while and will cost next to nothing.
